I have not heard anything on the 4 northern white rhinos that the czech zoo sent to Kenya. Does any one know how they are doing?

Hello,
there seem to be no more updates since January 2011. Are they still alife? No news often seem to be bad news in conservation...

Hi everyone,

Seems that the Northern Whites in Kenya are feeling sexy. biggrin.gif

The Back to Africa organization reports a mating between Najin and Suni on April 25 2012. Here is the article: http://www.backtoafrica.co.za/latest-news/suni-and-najin-mating.html

And on Youtube you can see a movie of the two rhinos 'getting it on': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kSv7sHpp7Y

Let's hope that the NWR population increases by nearly 15% in 16 months. Fingers crossed!

A second mating between Najin and Suni has been reported on the Ol Pejeta website. Here is the article: http://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/about/news/hope-northern-white-rhinos-suni-and-najin-mate-twice

Seems that the move to Africa did indeed stimulate breeding activity. Let's hope we'll see baby northern whites soon.

Hi all,

Not really good news from the northern white front in Ol Pejeta, Kenya. The old male Sudan is running on his last legs. Neither one of the two females, Najin and Fatu, are pregnant yet. They are moving southern white bulls in with the girls to hopefully create hybrids with northern white genes so that at least their genepool will be perpetuated.

Sadly this means that there is no more hope for a 'pure' northern white subspecies. Very disappointing to say the least. Yet another (sub)species wiped out by humans. I was really hoping for one or two pregnancies after the hopeful reports of matings last year.

Let's hope the two northern white females will procreate, albeit with southern white males.

Greetings,

Tom

Hi all

Can someone tell me what happened to Suni? Is he fertile? Just wandering why the decision to move Southern males in after the mating recorded between him and Najin.

Hi everyone,

The Ol Pejeta website posted news about the four remaining northern whites. Since the earlier matings haven't been succesful, they are switching to plan B: trying to get a southern white male to get the northern ladies pregnant.

You can read about it on their website:

Greetings,

Tom

Hi everyone,

Very sad news. Suni, one of the two male northern whites that was transferred to Ol Pejeta in Kenya has died of causes yet unknown. THere only remains one very old northern white male alive in the entire world now.

Total extinction of the northern white subspecies is looming.

You can read the press release on the Ol Pejeta website: http://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/about/news/breaking-news-ol-pejeta-conservancy-loses-one-its-northern-white-rhinos

A serious blow to the last effort of saving this species from extinction. sad.gif
