Join us at ZSL London Zoo for the most rhino-tastic day of the year. An illustrious array of speakers, from field project and conservation charity staff to academics and zoo personnel, will be speaking on a range of rhino-related topics and offering an unmissable insight into the rhino world. The event is intended as information-sharing and awareness-raising event for anyone with an interest in rhino conservation.
Confirmed speakers
Professor Mike Bruford, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University Supported by the International Rhino Foundation, renowned geneticist Mike Bruford and his research team have been investigating the pan-African physiogeography and evolutionary history of the black rhinoceros.
Peter Carr, Editor, Sporting Rifle In 2010, working with Save the Rhino, Sporting Rifle ran an auction to raise funds for rhino conservation efforts in Mkhuze Game Reserve, South Africa. Peter is visiting Mkhuze in March 2011 and will provide a review of this visit at Mayday.
Maggie Esson, Education Programmes Manager, Chester Zoo As well as providing substantial financial support for a number of projects through Save the Rhino, Chester Zoo's Education Department has provided valuable expertise and training for environmental education programmes in Laikipia, Kenya and Mkomazi, Tanzania. Maggie will provide an update on the progress of these projects.
John Gripper, Chairman, Sebakwe Black Rhino Trust In a talk entitled Will rhino survive in Zimbabwe?, John will consider the latest poaching information and discuss the reasons for the upsurge in the illegal killing of rhino. A report will be made on the National Parks' strategic planning for rhino conservation in Zimbabwe and the political role of the Unity Government.
Jasper Humphreys, Director of External Affairs, The Marjan Centre for the Study of Conflict and Conservation, King’s College London Understanding the implications of war and its impact on biodiversity conservation has been an overlooked field. The MCSCC is the first scholarly endeavour committed to examining the issues associated with this topic. As an insight to this work, Jasper will give the talk Rhino poaching: a new paradigm for a new century.
Inspector Nevin Hunter, Chief Wildlife Inspector, Wildlife Licensing and Registration Service at Animal Health Animal Health's Wildlife Licensing Registration Service issues CITES permits and certificates for the UK. Nevin will discuss recent developments in relation to the rhino.
Mark Jones, Programmes Director, Care for the Wild International Mark is also co-Chair of the Species Survival Network (SSN) Rhino Working Group and with this hat on, Mark will give the talk CITES and the trade in rhino horn.
Felix Patton, Technical Adviser, Rhino Fund Uganda Through his talk Bringing rhinos back to Uganda, Felix will present the steps that have to be taken, and are being taken by the current management, to ensure the survival, sustainability and development of the Rhino Fund Uganda.
Rebecca Perry, Conservation Officer, Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo began supporting SRI in 2005, through the EAZA rhino campaign, and have since provided support for Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Colchester Zoo's charity, Action for the Wild is also in the process of creating the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve in South Africa. Rebecca will expand on all these elements in her talk Rhino conservation with Colchester Zoo and the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve.
Detective Inspector Brian Stuart, Head of the Unit, Wildlife Crime Unit The WCU is responsible for enforcement of wildlife laws and for taking initiatives to prevent wildlife crime. Brian will discuss rhino conservation in this context.
Simon Tonge, EAZA Chair & Executive Director, Paignton Zoo The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, based at Paignton Zoo, co-funds the Dambari Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe. In a talk entitled Damabari Wildlife Trust and rhino operations in Matabeleland in 2010, Simon will update on activities in the field.
Berry White Berry, formerly Head Rhino Keeper at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent, has become internationally known as a 'rhino whisperer'. Berry will talk about her involvement in the 2009 move of rhinos from Dvur Kralove Zoo, Czech Republic to a new breeding project in Kenya as well as her years of experience in rhino translocations.
Nick Lindsay, Senior Curator - Zoo Projects, Zoological Society of London ZSL runs conservation programmes in Britain and across the world. At Mayday, Nick will will provide an update of their rhino-related conservation work in the talk The anti-poaching programme for rhinos in Nepal.
